The free condition report.

Every company in this trade offers a free estimate. An estimate is a sales visit: it lives in the salesman's head and it is no use to a board that was not in the room. We leave you a document instead.

Two hours in your sanctuary. Every pew photographed and graded on a four-point scale for wood and for upholstery, the failure mode named, one section refinished while you watch, and a written three-tier budget you can hand to the board.

Free whether or not you hire us. Bring it to any other bidder and ask them to price the same tiers.

What it contains

A board can act on it. A salesman's estimate, they cannot.

  • A one-paragraph summary of the room: species, age, finish history, upholstery history, structure, and our recommendation in plain words.
  • A per-pew table. Every pew numbered, graded A–D for wood and for upholstery, with a note on anything that needs a repair.
  • Photographs of the room, the typical condition, and every structural fault we found — under the seats, at the anchors, at the joints.
  • The test strip. One eighteen-inch section on a pew you choose, refreshed on the spot and left in place beside the old finish.
  • A three-tier budget from our published per-foot prices: stop-the-bleeding repairs only, our recommendation, and the full job. Each with a range and what is in it.
  • The specification we would use — foam density and ILD, fabric grade, finish product — so any other quote can be compared to it line by line.

How the two hours run

  1. Walk the room with you. Fifteen minutes. What bothers you, what the committee has been told, what the calendar looks like.
  2. Grade every pew. An hour. Both of us, one on wood, one on upholstery and structure. Under every seat, every anchor, every end joint. Photographs as we go.
  3. The test strip. Twenty minutes. Degrease, scuff, tone, one coat, on a pew you pick. Touch-dry before we leave.
  4. Go over what we found. Fifteen minutes. The grades, the faults, which tier we would recommend and why. Nothing is signed.
  5. The written report. Within two business days, as a PDF, with the ranges. Yours either way.

The grading scale

Four grades, two columns, every pew.

GradeWoodUpholstery
AFinish intact, no structural notes.Foam full height, fabric sound.
BFinish dull or worn. A refresh candidate.Foam softening, fabric worn at the edges.
CFinish failed — sticky, crazed, peeling. A refinish candidate.Foam collapsed, fabric stained or torn.
DStructural fault: loose joint, split board, failed anchor.Deck cracked or padding missing.

Most rooms we expect to see grade mostly B on wood and mostly C on upholstery: the finish is tired, the foam is done, the pews themselves are fine. That is a refresh and a reupholster, and it is the cheapest honest answer.

A sample report, so you know the shape of it.

A two-page sample for a fictional 40-pew sanctuary: the summary, the grading scale, an excerpt of the per-pew table, the test strip, and the three-tier budget. It is marked as a sample on every page. Yours will have your photographs in it.

Questions

About the report.

Is it really free, even if we do not hire you?

Yes. The report, the per-pew table with photographs, the test strip and the three budget ranges are yours to keep. Bring it to any other bidder and ask them to price the same tiers. Inside Utah there is no travel charge; outside Utah we schedule it with other visits in your area, or you can send four photos by email and have a written range in two days without a visit.

Who should be there?

Whoever will carry the decision to the board — the building chair, a trustee, the pastor or a facilities lead. Two hours is enough, and you do not need to stay for all of it. We walk the room with you at the start and go over the findings at the end.

Do you actually refinish part of a pew?

One section, about eighteen inches, on a pew you choose. Degreased, hand-scuffed, toned and recoated. It stays in place so the committee can look at it beside the old finish at service time, in the light the room actually has.

How soon after the visit is the report ready?

The grading and photographs are done on site. The written report with the three ranges follows within two business days.

Can we get the report as a PDF for the board?

That is how it comes. There is a sample below so you can see the shape of it before we visit.

Start with the report, not the quote.

Use the form, call, or email four photos and a pew count to hello@bethelfinishworks.com for a written range in two business days without a visit.
