Church Pew Refinishing in Salt Lake City

Downtown, the Avenues, Sugar House, the east bench, and out through the valley to Sandy and West Jordan. Closer than any other pew company by about a thousand miles.

Salt Lake City has the densest concentration of pre-1930 sanctuaries with original woodwork between Denver and the coast, and until now every company that could work on them was flying in.

The buildings

South Temple alone holds more century-old oak and walnut than most states.

A Catholic cathedral from 1909. An Episcopal cathedral from 1871, the oldest non-LDS church building in the state still in use. A Greek Orthodox cathedral from the 1920s. A Presbyterian church from 1905. A First Congregational congregation older than the state itself. Then the Avenues, Sugar House and the east bench, with Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist and AME sanctuaries from the streetcar years.

These rooms share a problem. The pews are solid, the finish is a century old, and the last real work on them was a recoat over hand oil sometime in the seventies — the kind that goes sticky in July. Every one of them is a refinishing job, not a replacement, and most of them are a refresh rather than a strip.

We also do the newer buildings: the suburban churches from the sixties through the nineties in Sandy, Draper, Holladay and West Valley, where the wood is fine and it is the foam and fabric that have given up.

How a Salt Lake job runs

  • Condition report within the week. We are close enough that it is an afternoon, not a trip.
  • Samples in your light. We drive over with fabric and finish boards and lay them on your pews at the hour you hold services.
  • No mobilization line. No hotels, no per diem, no truck rental. It is a commute.
  • Half the room at a time. Weddings, funerals and Sunday continue. In writing.
  • We are around afterward. Ten-year warranty, and we are twenty-five minutes away if anything ever needs a look.

Also serving Murray, Millcreek, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Draper, South Jordan, West Jordan, Taylorsville, West Valley, Magna and Bountiful.

In writing

Sunday. If your sanctuary is not service-ready by 6 a.m. Sunday, that week's labor is free. The carve-outs are written next to it: weather that closes the road, delays on the church's side, and events already on the calendar when we scheduled.

Ten years. If a seam opens, a finish lifts or a repair fails because of how we did the work, we come back and make it right. Transferable to whoever runs the building next.

The spec. What we quote is what goes in — foam, fabric and finish named in the contract, data sheets in your file.

Local questions

What churches here ask us.

How quickly can you look at our pews?

Usually inside a week. Salt Lake is twenty-five minutes from the shop, so a condition report is an afternoon on the calendar rather than a trip we have to plan around.

Our sanctuary is on the historic register. Is that a problem?

It is the opposite. We restore, we do not replace; repairs are reversible; patina stays. If your preservation architect has requirements, we work inside them and we document what we did for the file.

Do you work downtown, with the parking and access issues?

Yes. We have worked around loading zones and alley access before. Everything comes in through whichever door you tell us, on a schedule you set, and we do not need to park a trailer on South Temple.

Can we see something you have done nearby?

Ask. As jobs complete along the Wasatch Front we will point you to churches that have agreed to be references, and you can go sit in the pews yourself. That is better than any photograph.

Start with the report, not the quote.

Two hours in your sanctuary, every pew photographed and graded, one section refinished while you watch, and a written three-tier budget. Free, no drive charge, and yours whether or not you hire us. Or email four photos and a pew count to hello@bethelfinishworks.com for a written range in two days.

What we do
